TENT CITY (INstallation view), 2007

This is an installation of sculpture and video under the theme of Tent City. From the Civil War, to Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s seven acre tent city for prisoners in Phoenix, to the small masses of tent cities in every American city under bridges that serve as shelter for the homeless, Tent Cities are an American institution.

Often invisible until they are white-washed by encroaching gentrification and eventually demolished, this installation reflects several bodies of work that look at the relationship of monuments to tent cities, of white leisure to tent cities, and the surveillance of tent cities.
